Fund Raiser – It’s like a bakesale. But, not really.

November 2, 2009 in General by zacharydurland

Happy post-Halloween, friends!

It has been a pretty great semester so far. We’ve had two great speakers, a great event at Gallery West with some enticing speakers at the DSVC.

Now it’s time to put some gas in the tank by raising some funds for the OVC. The OVC uses such funds to purchase food and drink for our various events. This also includes things like cups, napkins other production materials needed to provide a quality experience for those taking time to enjoy what the OVC has to offer. But, before the tank is too dry, we would like to ask for volunteers in coming up with creative ways to generate some cash for the OVC.

Here are some ideas:

- Seek out donations from individuals or groups that you think would like to support our organization.
- Craft design and OVC related things like sketchbooks, tear-off pads, buttons or clothing to sell in the Fine Arts building.
- Donate proceeds from selling prints of your own work.
- Donating other items like design books, artwork or repoductions of your art to be sold on behalf of the OVC!

Your help is appreciated! This Wedensday at 5 PM in FA 358, before the DSVC meetings, please come by to discuss your ideas
or to drop off donations to be sold or even possibly member’s dues!

As usual, thank you so much and we hope to see you Wednesday for the DSVC meeting at the very least!

Rough

October 22, 2009 in Design News, Inspiration, Meetings, Speakers by zacharydurland

This week the OVC welcomed Todd Hart of Focus 2 as its first speaker. It was really great to hear from somebody who has been in the business for over twenty years and still radiates that exhilaration that made each of us stay up all night toying with Photoshop in the first place. Todd has won awards for his work and contributions to DFW’s own Rough magazine. Over a the DSVC website, you will find some information about the magazine and cover design history right near the top. Rough is produced throughout the year on a volunteer basis. So, check it out. And while your at it, catch up on what Mr. Hart has been doing over at Focus 2, lately.

Some Visual Complexity – Paula Scher

February 19, 2009 in General by zacharydurland

I was reflecting on a transportation system project from Sign & Symbol when I came across this image at Visual Complexity’s web site. I remember struggling with settling for a shallow and uninteresting map design for a Las Vegas project.

This kind of design reminds me that yes, information does need to be understandably organized. But, who says there can’t be some fun in it? This dense design by Paula Scher sparkles with paths, points and routes while providing amazing texture and color. This kind of work convinces me that every goal can be realized in ways that rival standard execution.

I’m inspired. I hope you are, too.
