Brooklyn based illustrator/designer/typographer Jessica Hische has, at the young age of 26, quickly made a name for herself as one of the design worlds most sought after creatives. With her use of self made typography and minimalistic illustration style, Jessica Hische is changing the way that we consider type as an image, rather than a side note.
Describe your design in one sentence.
“Jessica Hische’s work combines equal parts design, typography, illustration, brown sugar, and heavy
cream.” (Thanks, Jason from the Heads of State, for that one!)
What advice do you have for a young illustrator or graphic designer?
When you’re not doing client work, do a lot of personal work. It takes a lot of practice and exploration to be a great designer, so do it in any way possible. When looking for a day job, decide what is important to you. Jobs at big places or advertising firms tend to pay better but the work is less creative. Jobs at small studios pay less (much less sometimes) but the work can be really creative and rewarding. Plan ahead.Think of the kind of work you want to be doing and try to find the most direct path to that.
Being from New England, what’s your favorite Springsteen song?
This is a tough call. My mom and dad were (are) both massive Springsteen fans (he actually asked my mom out when she was a teenager — she turned him down because he was “too scruffy” and it is pretty much her lifelong regret). I might have to go with the “Thunder Road” or “Glory Days” as favorites.
Cake or Pie? Favorite Flavor?
Pie. Key lime all the way. Best Pie Ever.
A lot of your work seems to be very “seasonal”. What is YOUR favorite season?
Definitely Autumn. I love everything about it from the weather to the “back to school” feeling I still get, to corn mazes and Thanksgiving.
Foosball, Air Hockey, Pool, or Ping-Pong?
Pool. It’s definitely my preferred bar game. Foosball is fun and certainly gets rowdier but I am so bad at it that I can’t really enjoy it unless I’m playing someone as terrible as me.
