THE ILLUSTRATOR TUTORIAL HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR MARCH 2 (ITS SNOWING IN TEXAS Y’ALL!)

BUT, you should stick around on TUESDAY FEB 16 at 5:00 PM for an Adobe Photoshop advanced tips/ tricks session!!!

Also: there is an updated spring 2010 calendar for your reference. can you find it? the link probably says “spring 2010 calendar”, just saying.

This wednesday we will be having our first meeting of the year. Going to be more of an intro meeting, letting everyone know whats going on and what our big plans are.

We will be going over the different roles of the OVC, some of the events and ideas we have planned, and some opportunity to help out fellow students and the community at large.

Right after there is a meeting of the Dallas Society of Visual Communicators (http://www.dsvc.org/) and many of the officers will be trying to carpool to that event. They charge $10 for nonmember students, but its a resource worth looking into.

Expect some new changes in The OVC website coming soon, buddypress 1.2 went beta so its about to get exciting!!

This Wednesday, October 28 at 5:30 we have a cyber-visiting designer/ illustrator named FRANK CHIMERO. He lives and works in Missouri and has been kind enough to set up an iChat visit with us. If you are planning to attend, try to be at the VISUAL RESOURCE COMMONS a little before 5:30 to minimize distractions. Also, there will be a Q&A session afterwards so have some questions ready! Hopefully this goes well because it could open a lot of doors for us in the future. iChat and the internet make virtually every designer accessible to us, especially when they are so willing to participate, as I’m sure most of them are. If there are any designers you personally look up to and would like to hear from let us know! We want you to get as much out of this organization and out of this school as possible, so let us help you!

SOME of us were up at Gallery West for 12 hours setting up the show for this week! We are super excited about it, it looks awesome. It is totally the best show that has been up this year. That is my unbiased opinion. Zach brought his camera and snapped a few shots of us setting things up.. Most of the pictures are actually after everything was set up. So make yourself look busy and visit our FLICKR GROUP to check them out.
Also come to Gallery West on Friday Oct 30 between 7:00 and 9:00 PM for the closing reception. There will be food, music, people, art. Also, at least one person will be wearing a Halloween costume.. You should probably think about adding to that number.

This week the OVC welcomed Todd Hart of Focus 2 as its first speaker. It was really great to hear from somebody who has been in the business for over twenty years and still radiates that exhilaration that made each of us stay up all night toying with Photoshop in the first place. Todd has won awards for his work and contributions to DFW’s own Rough magazine. Over a the DSVC website, you will find some information about the magazine and cover design history right near the top. Rough is produced throughout the year on a volunteer basis. So, check it out. And while your at it, catch up on what Mr. Hart has been doing over at Focus 2, lately.

Alright guys, we made a mistake. While we were naming the gallery show we apparently had a mad case of the U.R.O.T.A.I.G.A. also known as unawarely ripping off the AIGA. This very weekend they are having a design conference called Make/Think, that we didn’t know about, though we should of. The title was referencing John Maeda and Clifton Burt, but this AIGA conference was a little too close for comfort. That being said, we’re not all that worried about it, and the show must go on! 

We would like to proudly present our new title – GOOD STUFF AND BETTER THINGS.

So.. don’t judge us. PLEASE make sure to submit your good stuff and better things! All other details of the show remain the same.

Food and Feedback

For those with bad memories or couldn’t make it to the meeting, here is the happenings.

New member and returning member dues are $10. Spencer is the treasurer and a trustworthy person to turn your mullah in to. Also, if you are in Online Design with Seiji, he will offer extra credit in his class if you attend the OVC meetings!

 We need some help filling in committees like the Online and Design committees. Talk to any of the officers and they can either fill you in on what you can help out with  or point you in the right direction of someone who can.

Gallery West, October exhibition, OVC will be shown. We need ideas for how we will set up, people who want to be involved, those who wish to help, and start getting in those submissions people!

The new logo content ended last week. Excitement is mounting to see who is the winner.

 Paul had a few announcements about possible workshops in Adobe programs to help designers speed up their design process. Working on a Zine workshop was also a topic of interest. It is a mini self publication magazine that we could in the end trade with students at Portland State University.

Parker brought up some thoughts on guerilla campaign advertising. Dennis had some great ideas to add. Also, Dennis is getting serious in redesigning the website and it will be mind blowing.

Hello friends. We just want to thank everyone for coming to the meeting this week, it was a really great turnout!!! Incase you missed the meeting, prepare to be filled in.

We introduced officers and our new faculty advisor.. I will save the details for the new Officers page which should be up soon. We also took volunteers for our two committees- Design Committee and Online Committee. We still need more volunteers, so here are the details:
DESIGN COMMITTEE: Submit designs for OVC meeting promotional posters and various projects, contests, and events as they arise.
ONLINE COMMITTEE: Post design news, inspiration, opinion articles, and anything else you find on the internet to theovc.org blog.

The committees are a great way to get involved– the design committee gives you an excuse to procrastinate when you are sick of working on your class projects.. plus it builds up your portfolio. The online committee puts your voice out there in the world wide web!! We don’t expect anything incredibly fancy from you guys.. posts can definitely take less than five minutes. We hope to make theovc.org a great resource for Vis. Comm. students- but you can only reap what you sow!

CONTEST REQUIREMENTS:
-Design a mark and accompanying logotype
-Submit one color and/or multicolor designs
-There is not entry fee; Submit as many designs as you like
-Submit a .EPS file of each logo on CD or email to info.theovc@gmail.com
